Last week Meodia made the article, The Faces Behind the Videogame Voices, naturally we missed off hundreds of great voice actors and the thing that really bugged me when I went over the list was the lack of female voice talent portrayed. So now we have a new list with 300% more female actresses and a couple of others that didn’t make the last one, enjoy.
Nathan Drake in Uncharted/ Nolan North
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Nolan North grew up in Connecticut and started his acting career in the ‘General Hospital’ spin off 'Port Charles' in 1997, where he met his wife Jill Murray. He didn’t seem to have much luck with the acting until ‘The Cat in the Hat’ videogame came along, voicing for that must have got him noticed (or at least changed his direction) as afterwards he’s appeared in over 100 games. Including ‘Madworld’, ‘Gears of War 2’, ‘Fable II’, ‘Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’, ‘Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed’ and ‘Halo 3’.
As for big roles, well he’s had a couple other than Nathan Drake. Such as The Prince in ‘Prince of Persia (2008)’, Will in ‘Dark Void’ and of course Desmond Miles from Assassin’s Creed.
As with most voice acting roles Nolan was told to repeatedly do certain lines over and over again but what they also do is set up a situation and then get them to read out multiple lines which the characters just adlib to. This next clip explains the origin of the infamous “kitty got wet” come-back.
Saren in Mass Effect/ Fred Tatasciore
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Fred Tatasciore is was a New Yorker initially but most of his childhood was in Los Angeles. Fred’s most famous voice is probably the Hulk in various series but he also worked on ‘Family Guy’, ‘Ben 10’, ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’, ‘American Dad’ and as for animated movies hes done work on ‘Final Fantasy VII Advent Children’, ’The Ant Bully', 'Barnyard’ and ‘9’
On the videogame side he has done a lot of additional voices which generally shows up but also a couple of key characters in games too. (it’s a-mee) Mario from ‘Assassin’s Creed 2’, Bane in ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ and literally 50 more but you’ll probably know him best as Baird from Gears of War, the man everybody loves to hate.
Apparently Fred loathes his face actually being seen and as such you have no idea how hard it was to try and track down some footage of him, so thanks IGN for spelling his name wrong and performing this interview.
GLaDOS in Portal/ Ellen McLain
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Ellen McLain isn’t really a voice actor, she’s an opera singer and by all accounts a pretty good one at that. Having done versions of ‘Marriage of Figaro’, ‘Die Fledermaus’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Madama Butterfly’, ‘Carmen’ and many others.
Naturally we don’t care about any of that, we want to know about videogames. Well shes only preformed in three franchises; all of them created by Valve. Other than her work in Portal she was the Overwatch in ‘Half Life 2’ and The Announcer in ‘Team Fortress 2’ and that’s all she’s done as far as I can tell. Oh but according to imdb she’s finished working on Portal 2.
As much as I love the ending song to ‘Portal’, if you’re like me you’ve heard it almost as many times as you’ve heard “the cake was a lie” and now you would rather never hear it again. I had hoped to find a good video of her singing Opera but other than one grainy video no such luck; so instead here’s the commentary she gives in Portal talking about how she came up with that voice.
Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid/ Jennifer Hale
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Jennifier Hale is a Canadian that after going into voice acting moved to LA and she occasionally goes by the name Carren Learning. She’s done numerous Disney work; performing the voices for Cinderella in most incarnations. She’s also preformed on shows like ‘Biker Mice from Mars’, ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’, ‘Mighty Ducks’, ‘The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest’, ‘Codename: Kids Next Door’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’... ad-infinitum.
When it comes to working in the videogame industry it seems like she’s the go-to-gal; with over 100 roles in 14 years. Aside from Naomi perhaps you would best know her as the female Commander Sheppard in the ‘Mass Effect’ series (or perhaps her fear of nobody hearing her voice wasn’t paranoia) but she’s also voiced Samus Aran in the ‘Metroid Prime’ series, Tira in ‘Soul Calibre III’, Sheena Fujibayashi in ‘Tales of Symphonia’, Alexandra Roivas in ‘Eternal Darkness’ and has done a lot of work on various ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ games.
Here are just come of her better known roles but don’t be fooled, there are plenty more out there.
The Arbiter in Halo 2/ Keith David
Where Else Have I Heard that Voice?
Keith David has appeared in a surprising number of good movies ‘The Thing’, ‘Platoon’, ‘Armageddon’ and ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’...well I thought it was a good movie. Then again he’s been in many more, shall we say, substandard movies like ‘Agent Cody Banks’, ‘Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within’, ‘Superhero Movie’ and ‘The Grave’. Oh and he’s also very interested in Jazz and has done a tribute act to the legend that is Nat King Cole.
When it comes to videogames though it seems that Keith has had nothing but good luck starting with the first Fallout game, but he didn’t hit it big in the videogame world until Halo 2. Then he voiced Julius in Saints Row and then Captain David Anderson in the Mass Effect series before moving onto play Sergeant Foley in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Of course Keith is also a very talented actor so here’s a brilliant fight scene from the movie “They Live”.
Head on over to page two for the remaining five.
